Planning One of the most contentious areas that Paul and Ted to deal with is planning and both a borough and a county level they can have a significant input. Charnwood Borough Council has responsibility for making decisions on planning applications (in line with local and national policies) and much of this is carried out by the Development Management team. Charnwood is also responsible for Building Control which ensures buildings are structurally sound and built to required health and safety standards. Residents will often contact Paul and Ted when they discover that they may be affected by a nearby planning application. In order to oppose the application, as local councillors, they can have the item called in to be discussed by Plans Committee if there are sufficient legitimate reasons to do so – meaning that it could be deemed to break planning rules. The application will then be discussed by councillors on the Plans Committee and, with the advice of officers, they will be able to decide whether to support or oppose the application. Unfortunately, it does not end there and the applicant can make an appeal which often overturns the decision. Therefore, what Paul and Ted attempt to do, is to listen to the views of residents and attempt to persuade the person modifying the application to modify it in such a way that it meets their concerns. You can find out whether there are planning applications in immediate vicinity of where you live by accessing the Charnwood Planning Explorer. If you do discover an application could affect you and want to do something about it you can then contact either Paul or Ted and they will be able to give you the appropriate advice and, if necessary, take the application to Plans Committee and speak on your behalf.
